Bahamas, June 8th 2017: June 15th is the last day to replace voter’s cards if you wish to cast your ballot for Local Government Elections. Reno V. Smith, Assistant Parliamentary Commissioner announced the deadline, while Local Government polls are set for June 22nd, while recounts will take place on the 23rd, followed by the declaration of winners.  Candidates have already been nominated this week, though the exact figure on how many persons were nominated is yet to come forward.

Some of them have already begun campaigns, with Tammi Mitchell, Candidate in the Pineridge Constituency, who says if given the opportunity to serve as a Local Government representative, a few of her goals will be to look at establishing disaster management teams. Mitchell currently hold the position as Supplies Officer at NEMA,  deputy co-chair of the Grand Bahama Disaster Consultative Committee (GBDCC), a voluntary position she has held for more than 15 years; a board member of the Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association (BASRA); a member of the Rotary Club of Lucaya.

Meanwhile, former Freeport Chief Councilor, Chervita Campbell who stepped down from her post in 2015, is again throwing her hat in the ring, as a candidate in the 2017 local government elections. She released a statement clearing her name on her demitting office, stating that proof there was no malfeasance on her part, is that she continued to remain an active and voting member of the Freeport City Council after demitting the chair.

Local Government Elections existed in the Bahamas in the form of appointed “Board of Works”, however was implemented as a modern system in March 1996.
