Bahamas, June 6th 2017: It’s June 2017, and that means Local Government Elections are due. Following the general elections last month, Acting Parliament Registration Commissioner, Charles Albury says his department was already in preparation mode for the upcoming Local Government polls. The date has not been set yet.

There are a total of 32 local government districts, 13 second-schedule districts and 19 third-schedule districts.  Local government is administered through the Office of the Prime Minister.

Consultant at the Department, Mr.Harrison Thompson described the process of electing council members during the local government polls, “council members are elected to govern from the town committee. From the town committee there’s a designated number of council members for each district, except in Grand Bahama where they will vote directly for council members as opposed to committee members. From the town committee, you are eligible to be council on most of the islands”, end quote.

The last Local Government Polls held in June 2011 and saw 391 positions contested.
