Turks and Caicos, June 7, 2017 – Providenciales – On Tuesday 13th June, 2017, the Department of Disaster Management Emergencies (DDME), in collaboration with the TCI Community College (TCICC) will be hosting a Culinary Cook-Off with three culinary teams from the TCI College Hospitality Department.  The event will take place at the TCI Community College, Downtown Providenciales, beginning at 10:00am.

The Cook-off promotes the importance of non-perishable foods, which can help us weather a storm. Judges for this event have been selected from Professional Culinary Chefs in the Turks and Caicos Islands and persons with Disaster Management background.

The participating student chefs will be given items from a hurricane food supplies basket, from which they will be required to prepare a three course meal.  This event will give the students the opportunity to compete in a friendly food-centered competition; allowing them to showcase their talents and develop their culinary skills. The competition is an excellent opportunity to highlight to the wider public how a well-balanced meal can still be prepared under the extenuating circumstances events such as hurricanes may present.

Under DDME’s Hurricane Season’s theme for 2017, “Are You Prepared for the Unexpected,” this event further highlights the importance of being prepared for the season; encouraging all households to be equipped with essential and sufficient nonperishable Hurricane Food Supplies, for each family member, for at least three (3) days.

This initiative will help the DDME strengthen the relationship with its partners as the Turks and Caicos Islands moves towards Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM)building resilient communities, throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands.
