Bahamas, June 21st 2017: More houses are coming says Government as it was announced during Budget Debate that there will be 300 houses built in the Carmichael Village,72 will be built in the new Carmichael West, ten low to middle income family residential houses are set for the Fox Hill District and development of 5.6 acres of land on Faith Avenue are all planned for Nassau.
Environment and Housing Minister Romauld Ferreira says $2M will be spent on the Carmichael Village, with just under $330 thousand earmarked to complete homes in Bahamia West, which is in Freeport, Grand Bahama.
There are policy changes too, said the minister, as Social Services Control will now track rental payments and no longer will the Department of Housing be responsible for renovations and repairs to houses where the owner has been resident for over 10 years.
Other plans include a survey of the housing stock in Nassau’s inner city including a survey of households still using pit latrines; the Minister said the plan is to get proper sanitation to these areas.
Meanwhile, government also intends to increase the Bahamas Mortgage Corporation, BMC’s portfolio to allow a private home construction programme. The minister says the process of acquiring vacant land for this project has already begun.
