Turks and Caicos-Grand Turk, June 19th 2017: If you happen to notice large brightly coloured painted boxes that look like little huts, in and around the Turks and Caicos, it might be a Book Drive Collection Box. The books are being collected with the aim of restoring books burnt at the Victoria Public Library in Grand Turk. The 128 year old library lost 90% of its books lost to fire in March this year. In a recent event hosted by Grace Bay Resorts, school children in the area came together to paint huts and participate in the launch of the book collection drive. Participating in the event was Oheleo Higgs of the TCI Tourist Board who gave an appeal to the public, that if you notice the huts, to feel free and donate unused books you may have at home. He says professionals who have their old school books from colleges, have pledged to donate them, teaming up with their alumni to pool additional resources.
Grace Bay Resorts teamed up with the world’s leading travel experts, JG Blackbook for a project to benefit the Victoria Public Library. It is something exciting for Nikheel Advani, COO of GBR who says he envisions the library to become one the greatest in the world, with books being an avenue for ‘cultural exchange’ right here in the TCI, as the drive has been extended globally to all business partners visiting the islands.
Jenna Gardner of JG Blackbook says while it’s easier to donate money to the cause, she wants partners and those around the world to consider putting some books in a duffel bag and send them down to the TCI, filling the library with “treasures around the world”. The 12 colourful huts will be stationed around the island at different resorts and serve as donation sites for books from guests and residents. Already two Hartling group properties have agreed to take the huts, including the Shore Club.
