Bahamas Medical students to receive funding for internships

Bahamas, June 22nd 2017:

Provisions have been made for medical students to receive funding at the start of their internships. Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis made the announcement at the 2017 Graduation Ceremony for Medical School Graduates, University of the West Indies (UWI) School of Clinical Medicine and Research (Bahamas) at Melia Nassau Beach.

The Prime Minister gave the assurance, stating that he had directed the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance to find the funds allowing the students to attend their orientation carded the following morning. He says the decision was taken after he was approached by several students and their parents expressing concern over the lack of provisions made for them to commence their internships.

Recognizing the importance of the student doctors, and being a medical doctor himself, PM Minnis said of the students they are important to providing the manpower within the healthcare system, as the profession is anticipated to have a shortfall; he also reiterated his government’s commitment “to reforming and modernizing healthcare delivery in The Bahamas”.

As a result, Prime Minnister Dr. Hubert Minnis says his Government is fully committed to continuing the investment in the Clinical and Research Programmes at the UWI School of Clinical Medicine and Research (Bahamas).

A record 44 medical students graduated from the programme on Monday night as medical doctors.
