T&T Coast Guard Makes Multi-Million Dollar Drug Bust

Trinidad & Tobago, May 26, 2017 – Port of Spain – Three people have been detained by the police following the seizure of 40 kilograms of cocaine valued at TT$18.9 million (US$3,024,000 million) in the Gulf of Paria early Thursday.The Coast Guard reports that around 3:30am (local time) it intercepted a white 24 feet pirogue with three occupants – two Trinidadians and a Venezuelan.

The Coast Guard approached the pirogue and gave instructions for the occupants to stop for a routine board and search exercise.

The occupants refused and on giving chase, the Coast Guard intercepted the vessel that was later escorted to shore where a search was conducted.

Coast Guard officers say they found two plastic bags containing 36 packages of the drug. The suspects were detained handed over to the organised Crime Narcotics and Firearms Bureau of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service for further investigations.

This is the fifth drug seizure made by the Coast Guard which says it has found approximated TT$850,000,000 (US$136,000,000 million) in drugs for the year.
