The Department of Mental Health & Substance Dependence will soon be spearheading a Mental Health Crisis Intervention Team. The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) is a first responder program for people with mental illnesses formed through a community partnership among law enforcement, mental health care providers and families.
The first step in creating the CIT was a two-day training conducted by Crisis Intervention Team International attended by social workers, mental health professionals, hospital security staff and members of the Royal Turks & Caicos Police Force.
Dr. Alicia Malcolm, Mental Health Director said the CIT will help to improve safety and redirect persons with mental illnesses from the judicial system to the health care system. “We recognize that there is a major need for mental health training for those persons who are on the front lines who may have to respond to a mental health crisis. This workshop is therefore an important first step in starting to develop a sustainable training program for first responders and other key stakeholders.”
