Turks and Caicos, May 30, 2017 – Grand Turk –  For the first time in 13 years the PDM, on Monday, led at the National Heroes Day Memorial Service to honour the party’s founder, the late Right Excellent James Alexander George Smith McCartney.

In an unprecedented undertaking, the widow of the Late JAGS – Dorothy McCartney – addressed the service with words from her husband and insight into what motivated him as he fought for equality for the TCI people.

In a controversial presentation, Grand Turk North Member, George Lightbourne delivered a speech on behalf of the PNP Opposition which featured, among other things, inappropriate remarks focused on the now deceased first Chief Minister’s personal life.

And in a never before recorded happening, the Opposition party was a no show for the wreath laying portion of the service, the PNP was represented instead by the acting Prison Superintendent.

The public holiday to remember Rt Excellent JAGS was yesterday for these islands and 37 years after his death in a plane crash in the US, the freedom fighter was paid homage in song, poetry, dance and remarks by country leaders including Premier Sharlene Robinson, Governor Dr John Freeman and speaker for the day, Government Appointment member to the House of Assembly, Maxivanno Thomas.
