Turks and Caicos, May 26th 2017: For the first time in 13 years the PDM Party will commemorate National Heroes Day as the Government of the day and lead the memorial service of the Most Excellent JAGS McCartney, who is founder of their party.  The country’s only National Hero, will be remembered in the annual service held in Grand Turk at the memorial site this Monday, which is also a public holiday.

A rush to complete a spruce up of the memorial site were on this past week, with new roadway graded and soon to be paved, a cleaner premises now that overgrown bush and debris are gone and refurbishment to the National Memorial Park itself should enhance the celebration. The service on Monday morning is tradition, and is a solemn reminder of the man who fought for Turks and Caicos Islanders to play a larger role in the governance of the nation.

James Alexander George Smith McCartney died in 1980 in a plane crash over New Jersey, USA as the first Chief Minister of the TCI.  McCartney, who was just 34 years old at the time of the crash, was into the fourth year of his tenure when he died; among his accomplishments was entering into a dramatic stand-off at the Junkanoo Club with the British which brought about a new constitution and more power to the Turks and Caicos people.  There is no word on who will be the speaker at this year’s ceremony, which is always punctuated by a wreath laying ceremony.

Later on Monday, taxi drivers in Providenciales will hold their annual motorcade to honour JAGS.  It gets started at the down town ball park.
