Grand Turk, TCI – May 1, 2017 Member of Parliament for Grand Turk North, George Lightbourne, has called cabinet’s decision to relocate prisoners to Green Door a “grave mistake.”

On Thursday, in a post-Cabinet meeting statement, it was announced that the Governor had been advised to approve renovations to Green Door building for temporary use as accommodation for low-risk prisoners.

Lightbourne responded to the announcement on Saturday saying he believed the Governor had been “ill advised” and that the government did not carry out any consultations before making this decision. He further added that the Green Door prisoner relocation proposal had already been rejected once by residents of the area who feared property devaluation and threats to personal security. Additionally, Lightbourne noted that the facility could have negative effects on tourism and to students and staff of the TCI Community College, which is near the building.

Lightbourne called on the Governor to recall the decision. “In light of recent events of inmates escaping, causing fire and inmates sexually molesting prison officers, I am even more convinced that this idea should be abandoned.”
