Bahamas, May 22nd 2017 – Nassau – “I want to make clear that I, Chester Cooper, in no way support those sentiments or think them a fitting and proper analysis of the PLP’s loss.” These were the words expressed by the PLP candidate for Exumas & Ragged Island, as he attempted to distance himself from the controversial remarks expressed by a fellow PLP member.

PLP’s chairman emeritus, Errington “Minky” Isaacs went on a racial rant while addressing a crowd of supporters at the PLP headquarters on Tuesday 16th May 2017. Issacs said, “Check your history, years ago, who round us up while we were in Africa? Our own black people, round us up, while white people stood on the sidelines and watched.”

Adding to his rant, Isaacs told supporters, “You don’t see no white people supporting the PLP.” These raunchy comments, though cheered on by the crowd, have since received major backlash after a live video of the event spiraled on social media.

PLP’s candidate for North Eleuthera, Clay Sweeting, a white Bahamian, was also present at the meeting. However, it was Cooper who labeled it as, “unfortunate remarks made by the moderator,” and denied that it was “an allegory for our party’s recent loss at the polls.”

Cooper also explained, “Many white Bahamians voted for me, and fought a hard battle in Exuma and Ragged Island to keep that constituency in the PLP’s column in what appears to be a wave election.” Cooper was one of the only four candidates to win their seat in the election.
