Bahamas, May 8th 2017: Discussions on providing lowered electricity costs are said to be ongoing. In a statement from the Prime Minister’s office, recommendations on how the Perry Christie administration can achieve its promise of lowered electricity costs to its consumers have been received. The recommendations come from a committee established by the government to oversee proposals put forward on ways it can lower electricity bills for consumers, while at the same time improve the efficiency of distribution. Early in the Election Campaign, the Prime Minister announced on his PLP platform, plans to cut the electricity bill to its lowered income households in society. When first announced back in April, power supplier, BPL issued a statement, distancing itself from the Christie’s campaign promise stating that, “Our goal at BPL is to provide consistent, reliable, affordable electricity service to our customers, while maintaining a viable operation…”

Christie says “meticulous review of various proposals were carried out by the government”. He says the matter was of “great economic importance and benefit to the public”.  Meanwhile, the Prime Minister closes saying that his “government expects to complete consideration of this matter as soon as possible”.

The latest statement comes just two days before Bahamians go to the polls on May 10th.
