Turks and Caicos, TCI May 5, 2017 – Providenciales – Attorney Mark Fulford has raised questions regarding TCI leaders not being included in the University of the West Indies (UWI)’s Honour Park following the induction of Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness on Wednesday.
The Park was established in 2005 at the UWI’s Mona campus in St. Andrew, Jamaica, to recognize CARICOM heads or prime ministers who are UWI alumni. Last year, Trinidad & Tobago Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley was inducted to the park. However, days before the induction The Gleaner brought to UWI’s attention that Jamaica’s sitting prime minister, Holness, had not been inducted. The UWI later publicly apologized to Holness saying it was an oversight.
Now, Fulford would like the university to explain why TCI former premier Dr. Rufus W. Ewing and current Premier Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson have not been honored in the park. Cartwright-Robinson and Ewing both have undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from UWI Mona. According to Fulford, Ewing was instrumental in making TCI a contributing territory to the UWI.
“It is with much disappointment to the people of the TCI and those TCI students in Jamaica that their former premier and current Premier are not being considered to be inducted into the UWI park. This oversight of the UWI with respect to the former Premier was brought to the attention of the UWI without resolution,” said Fulford.
There are 18 heads of state and former leaders of CARICOM states inducted into the park including former prime ministers Bruce Golding, Patrick Manning and David Thompson of Jamaica, T&T and Barbados respectively.
