Bahamas, May 19th 2017 – Nassau – Officers of the Central Detective Unit on Wednesday arrested four male and three female employees of the Bahamas Agricultural and Industrial Corporation (BAIC) for theft. It is alleged, that on the night of the general election, these seven BAIC workers stole a number of computers, a television and other electrical items from the government agency.
Attorney Wayne Munroe, QC is now representing all seven suspects. Though the alleged crime is said to have all been caught on camera, Munroe has raised the subject of victimization. He said he hopes that’s not the case, but, “I find it remarkable that the approach to the suspects is different from the approach ever before and I also find that disturbing, the makeup of the persons and particularly given what is the allegation.”
Newly elected Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis, however, recently stated that ‘victimization is illegal’. As a result, Munroe said he hopes the Prime Minister “will sack the minister and the persons responsible for it.” Adding also, “I will tell Dr. Hubert Minnis when it is shown, if it is shown to be victimization, that it is and we’ll call upon him to act in accordance to what he said he will do.”
Assistant Commissioner of Police and CDU Chief, Clayton Fernander also revealed that more persons might have been involved. Fernander thus confirmed that more suspects may soon be questioned for theft by reason of employment. Investigations are continuing.
