Southwest coming to TCI

Southwest Airlines announced yesterday that service to TCI will begin in November, 2017. The service, which is still pending government approvals, will operate between Providenciales International Airport (PLS) and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Providenciales is the airline’s 16th international destination while Southwest will become the 11th international carrier to operate at PLS.

The addition of TCI comes amidst Southwest’s continuing Caribbean expansion. In December, 2016, the airline launched flights to Cuba and earlier this year increased the frequency of it’s Puerto Rico routes.

Chief Executive Officer of the TCI Airports Authority, John Smith said this decision follows fours years of lobbying by the TCI Tourist Board and the Turks and Caicos Hotel & Tourism Association. Southwest Airlines has applied to the US Department of Transportation for authority to operate to TCI from Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
