Bahamas, April 18, 2017 – Nassau – More than a dozen firefighters who battled the blaze, haze and smoke for more than a month in the wake of the March 5 fire at the Harrold Road dump got a special thank you from Sandals Royal Bahamian this week, lunch delivered by managers directly to the fire station along with words of appreciation.

“We are extremely appreciative to the firefighters who were so courageous and worked so hard to keep people and homes safe,” said Sandals Public Relations Manager Lazar Charlton. “Coming here, being with you, bringing lunch is a small token of our appreciation. We wanted you to know that we care and we thank you for all you did.”  The boxed lunches courtesy of the award-winning resort’s kitchen in combination with the Sandals Foundation were served with handshakes, hugs and words of encouragement.

The simple act of kindness touched the emotions of firefighters who gathered at the Cable Beach Fire Station for the April 11 lunch event.  “This has been the most challenging fire we have ever had to fight,” said Superintendent Walter Evans. “When you find a whole subdivision being threatened and when you appreciate that there were at least 60 structures that were directly in the path and we did not lose a single structure, that was an achievement. These men worked hard, they worked long hours but everyone was dedicated to the same principle – to save every home, every building. We did and we did it with limited resources.

“So we are very grateful to Sandals which has always been a friend of the department. We are very grateful to you for this gesture showing that you noticed and you cared. Thank you, Sandals, and to all of you here today.”

The fire, said Evans, is largely out, though he believes there may be pockets that will flare up again. Many residents are still cleaning their homes and dealing with the aftermath.
