Turks and Caicos, April 20, 2017 – Providenciales – With the support from her colleagues, Premier Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson was cheered on by the sounds of beating desks, as she announced, “we will also address the lingering issue of gratuity, outstanding disputes with former civil servants, payment options and other issues of interests for civil servants.” This was stated as Premier Robinson laid out her first budget address to the House of assembly on Tuesday 18th April 2017.
Premier Robinson announced that her government is open to an honest dialogue with the public service. Though dates have not yet been confirmed as to when she will meet with the public service, she stated that she has met with the Civil Service Association and believes that “it is vital to have a healthy dialogue between government and its civil service.”
The Premier added, “We will provide the much needed resources and partner with the head of the public service to secure service-level agreements throughout the service in a corruption-free environment.”
As promised in the PDM’s document of change [manifesto], Premier Robinson told the house speaker and members of assembly that an effective and efficient civil service is a matter of priority for her government. She did not, however, emphasize on the compensation packages promised to civil servants. The 2017-2018 Budget address continues throughout this week.
