Elections will not hamper Defense Force HMBS Flamingo Memorial

Bahamas, April 18, 2017 – Nassau – May 10th HMBS Flamingo Observances will not be deterred by Election date. The Defence Force in a statement to Magnetic Media News, says observances on the day only last for an hour in the morning and will not hamper The Bahamas General Elections. Following the May 10th Election date announcement, there was much clamour of it clashing with annual observances and the disrespect to the families affected by the event.

It is also customary that members of the Defence Force assist in maintaining law and order during the Electoral process. However, the Defence Force assures that its members will be out in their numbers to provide assistance.

During the ceremony, prayers are offered, a wreath is laid at the monument at Coral Harbour Base and a wreath is laid offshore at sea in memory of the four Marines, usually by representatives of their families.  The Prime Minister last week expressed regret at the date clash, and told media he would be in attendance of the memorial for the marines killed and the survivors by Cubans in 1980.
