Turks and Caicos, April 28th 2017: The Police Commissioner’s report gives a lowered number for reported crimes in the past year in the Turks and Caicos. In listing his figures the Top Cop reported an up in the number of possession of drug cases, with a total of 97 cases for the year, with 24 cases recorded with the intent to supply. With regards to Burglary and Aggravated Burglary, a total of 703 were reported this year, 45 of which he says were aggravated. In 2015 this figure stood at 65 burglaries.

His statements say 134 robberies were recorded, with Providenciales accounting for 130. Ninety Six (96) of these robberies involved the use of a firearm, while some involved more than one individual with a firearm taking the number of firearms used to commit robberies to 111. Compared to 2015, only 19 robberies were recorded.

In answering questions to this 111 firearms figure, the commissioner attributed this to “a very small group of persons committing multiple offences. Belief is that we have a very small number of very dangerous career criminals who will stop at nothing to steal and rob”.

Meanwhile, a total of 521 persons were arrested, while 271 of them were charged and reprimanded before the courts. One hundred and Fifty arrested account for local males, while 98 account for foreign males arrested.

In his report, the Commissioner attributed the root cause of these crimes to the large numbers of undocumented individuals living in illegal and unregulated housing, issues he says will be tackled this year.
