Guyana, April 27th 2017-Georgetown: With the Caribbean a hub for tourism, the Caribbean Public Health Agency, CARPHA says more attention must be paid to the region’s health systems and its impact on the sector. As a result, CARPHA has launched a public private partnership programme in Guyana, with the aim of addressing any threats against the health and safety of visitors and residents with focus on disease control and food sanitation.
The Tourism Health Programme launched in Guyana this week, under the theme “Your Experience, Your Health, Your Safety Matters”.
CARPHA Executive Director, Dr. James Hospedales, noted that while “Travel and tourism is the ‘business of the Caribbean’ and is the most tourism dependent region in the world, the industry is vulnerable to a range of HSE threats”.
He adds that the intense movement of residents and visitors has become a regional health security issue. Dr. Hospedales says solutions to improve industry quality and competitiveness include attention to health monitoring and response, food safety and environment sanitation. These require a multi-sectoral approach to implementation”. The programme, launch also signaled the kick start of another symposium on the Effects of Climate Change, the Environment and Human Health, which will run from April 27th to 29th.
