TCIG sends team into Kew Town for Community Health Education and screening

Turks and Caicos, March 6, 2017 – Providenciales – On the morning of Friday March 3rd 2017, a team comprised of personnel representing Primary Healthcare, Health Promotion and Advocacy Unit, The Department of Social Services, Emergency Management Services and the Haitian Consulate visited the community of Kew Town in Providenciales.

The objectives of the visit was to engage in health education and screening for HIV, blood pressure, blood sugar levels and cholesterol.  The team began the exercise in the area at 10am with an initial walk-through and were invited to set up screening and education stations on an elevated stage located at the town center.  The enthusiasm and gratitude of the residents was reflected not only in their comments but by their questions on when the team would return.  Members of the community were also seen going to their neighbors to invite them out to the area where the team was set up.

A total of 42 persons were screened for diabetes and hypertension and 25 were willing to be tested for HIV, 10 referrals were made to the Blue Hills Clinic for further management.  Hon. Edwin Astwood stated; “It is important to meet people where they are, the strategy implored allows us to address health care and health care issues at the level of prevention.”

Acting Director of Health Services, Dr. King who was present at the community stated; “Our aim was to bring health care to the people and identify any disease in the early stages where it can be easily managed.  It was a pleasure being a part of the team, there is a continued need for these services and the community response.”
