RBC bank closure met with uproar

Bahamas, March 6, 2017 – Bimini – Replacement banks may be an option for Family Islanders who are now reacting to the announcement by RBC that it is closing four branches; three of which are in three family island communities.

Spanish Wells and Bimini are not taking the decision by RBC lying down.  Spanish Wells, Chief Councillor said their community was caught off guard by the notice, as the bank had given no prior warning of the closure.  The merger of the Spanish Wells branch with Harbour Island, both in Eleuthera but on different cays happens in June.

Bimini is to merge with a Freeport branch, that is set for May and also means the bank will be on a completely different island.  Treasure Cay is to merge with Marsh Harbour in April, and while the two are on the same mainland in Abaco, they are miles apart.

RBC is still not saying what the closure of these three branches and the one at the Lynden Pindling International Airport will mean for staff cuts; one source said it would be between 20 and 30 staff released from RBC Royal Bank, also known as the Government’s bank.
