Turks and Caicos, March 9, 2017 – Grand TurkThe historic, iconic Victoria Public library is destroyed by fire and while there is very little information at this hour, photos and videos of the inferno early this morning tell a very sad story about the building located on Duke Street in Grand Turk.  Police confirm that the call came in at 4:41am about the fire.

Education & Library Services Minister, Josephine Connolly is speaking out early about the fire which was being battled by the airport fire crew, said, This morning I was very shocked and saddened to learn that our dear historic  library was destroyed by fire! The Victoria Library played a very important part in the lives of many of us; we read there, did research there, met our friends there and learnt a lot there. At this time we must now give the police and others time to do their investigations to determine the cause of this fire.”
Minister Connolly added that the Government is committed to restoring some kind of library service to the people of the Capital right away.

The Victoria Public Library is one of the most visited sites in Grand Turk, it is home to the Tourist Board’s island fish fry and it has been standing, completed in that very spot since 1889; which makes it 128 years old.
