Farmers suspect contaminated feed the cause of pig deaths

Bahamas, March, 2017 – Nassau – Exuma is not the only island were pigs are dropping dead.   A striking report today exposes that farmers suspect that the food from the BAIC Gladstone Road Farm Mill is contaminated and has led to the death of pigs and hogs.   The Tribune newspaper confirmed 40 swine have died in the past two months.  Clearly there is something wrong, as the mill has been closed now for three weeks, which is also presenting a food sourcing problem for the farmers.

One farmer explained: “When corn turns rancid you get toxins, alpha toxins which lead to inferior food quality, poor palatability, and it will interact with other nutrients of ration or feed formulation.   Essentially you’ll have a primary problem but also secondary problems.”   The bad feed, left on the dock for unaccounted lengths of time is uninsured like American feed and so it is used or lost.  Which means livestock is threatened.

It was explained to the news reporter that after the hurricane, lots of feed was purchased from the government mill and it killed their animals and there is the added and bigger issue; the human consumers.  “…when you’re dealing with meat for human consumption, you should take this seriously; it’s an applied science and it’s so important for a country.”  Important it is.

The farmers explain that this is an ongoing problem, successive governments have failed to link hands with them to deal with the mill and a promise by Prime Minister Perry Christie to help is now three years old.
