Dump fire controlled, Ministry working overtime

Bahamas, March 8, 2017 – Nassau – The Minister said he and his team would work until 2am this morning to ensure they contained that fire now restricted to the landfill, but which still has smoke polluting nearby Jubilee Gardens.

Minister of Environment, Kenred Dorsett said it was to be another long night until they ensured the dump could resume operations.  Residential waste will be accepted at the dump from today; Industrial and Commercial trash will not be accepted until the dump is ready for it.   In speaking to media, the Minister said the problem is that the dump expanded over the years, gradually eating away at the buffer which existed between it and the nearby communities.

There are currently two groups in negotiations with government to take over management of the Harold Road dump; one  is a consortium which has been in talks with The Bahamas Government for nine months now.  Hundreds were displaced by Sunday’s fire, which was exacerbated by the 35 mph winds on that day.
