Turks and Caicos, March 15, 2017 – Providenciales – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of The Bahamas is actively working on establishing a Consular office in the Turks and Caicos Islands said Minister, Fred Mitchell, who on the weekend spoke to Magnetic Media.
“I met a couple of people, I mentioned it to the Premier, I think it’s time to have an honorary consul who will represent our interest here and facilitate authentication of documents, certification of various things that need to be done and to look after our commercial interest. I feel that ultimately it must be a consul general which means a professional diplomat will have to come here with some type of trade focus as well.”
Mitchell candidly said it is all about selecting the right person for the job; someone who is not only politically neutral but ably qualified to be a diplomat. “So the first step is I want to identify an honorary consul, I’m taking a couple of names back to Nassau for them to be vetted and hopefully that will come shortly.”
Minister Mitchell said it is an active assignment, but had no definitive date on when the office would be established. Currently Haiti and Jamaica have consulate offices set up in the TCI.
