Nassau, Bahamas, February 9, 2017 – To equal the voter count of 2012, over 78,000 more Bahamians will have to register to vote. The gap between this time and the last time as it relates to the General Elections is grabbing headlines and concerning many that the country could have a government selected by a very small number of the electorate.
None of the party conventions did what the Parliamentary Registration Department had hoped, as the stream of Bahamians to register has been slow and is cited as severe voter apathy. Voter Registration Centers now have extended hours to 8pm, even on Saturdays in Nassau and in Grand Bahama until 7pm Mondays to Fridays. Add to this, 24 more registration centers have been opened across the Capital.
Up to February 2, 93,471 were on the register… at the last May 7 201 General Election, there were 172,000 voters of which 78% turned out to actually vote.
