Halfway House coming, fruition of 22 year old drug intervention
Providenciales, TCI, February 24, 2017 – At least 25 of the over 100 people who are in need of intense drug rehabilitation will be able to get it soon at a specialized center to be constructed in the South Dock area of Provo.
Government today handed over a long anticipated $150,000 to the Turks and Caicos Drug Prevention Foundation and Health Minister, Edwin Astwood signed the cheque and put it into the hands of an overjoyed Dierin Longmire, president of the not for profit.
“I’m so grateful, it’s been long overdue working on this since like 1995, for something to do with the drug and alchohol issues that are presented in the Turks and Caicos Islands. I’m so grateful for my committee, I’m so grateful for both governments for supporting me and my committee and getting everything organized.” – Dierin Longmire
The halfway house will be specially outfitted as a home for those struggling with overcoming addiction and Dr. Alicia Malcolm, Director of Substance Abuse Department explained there is a program ready to be activated to get those, mostly men who are mainly from Provo and Grand Turk, on the road to recovery.
“For instance there will be individual therapy that’s provided, group councelling that will be taking place during the week. There will also be family counseling as well provided because obviously we don’t want to just work with the individual but also their families, so that they are aware on how to work with their loved ones. And also if there is medication intervention that is needed, that will be provided because assessments will be done by the psychiatrist.” – Dr. Alicia Malcolm
The presentation was held this morning at Ministry of Health office in Providenciales.
