Providenciales, TCI, January 24, 2017 – The Turks & Caicos National Trust is launching a WETLANDS DAY CARAVAN on February 2nd as part of its commitment to environmental conservation and management, and raising awareness on the importance of wetlands which are integral to Turks & Caicos ecology.

This year, the National Trust is heading to the twin islands, North & Middle Caicos where primary school students will visit and do field investigation at different wetland areas such as Major Hill Creek, Flamingo Pond, among others.  This exercise will give these students who are future scientists an opportunity to investigate the natural organization of a wetland and the interrelationships between the wetland and the surrounding environment.

The Wetlands Day Caravan, a bus hop-in hop-off activity from one wetland area to another, will also be an opportunity for students to do bird watching and observe other wildlife.  “Wetlands for Disaster Risk Reduction” has been adopted as this year’s celebration theme to highlight the role of wetlands as a natural safeguard against disasters.   According to National Trust Education Programme Manager Jonathan Sayao, the activities for this year’s Wetlands Day celebration seek to increase student awareness of the wetlands by giving them close contact with the environment itself and for them to be catalyst in preserving these ecological treasures.

“We’re trying to get the young people to understand that the wetlands are of national significance”, said Mr. Sayao. “They’re living in an area that is so blessed with natural resources and these should be preserved for them – the future generation.”

The general public is encouraged to participate and may call the Turks & Caicos National Trust office at (649) 941-5710 or e-mail at info@tcnationaltrust.org. Those interested may join on this day or may opt to form a group to an excursion to the wetlands. National Trust staff will be happy to assist.

Every 2nd of February each year is World Wetlands Day (WWD). This day marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar. The worldwide celebrations aim to raise public awareness on the importance and value of wetlands.
