Providenciales, TCI, January 13, 2017 – The seventh anniversary of the Haiti earthquake did not escape notice here in the Turks and Caicos, and the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies marked the day with a table top session aimed at producing a national contingency plan in the event of an earthquake in these islands.

Kayana Bowen of the DDME said it was important to remember the devastation of nearby Haiti.  “One of the purposes as well for the tabletop exercise is today marks the 7th anniversary of the Haiti’s 2010 earthquake.  So we take in it as a time to reflect on our neighboring brothers and sisters who lost their lives.  Approximately two hundred and twenty thousand persons lost their lives in that event, so we’re just taking a moment to make sure that we are ready in the event that something like that happens in the future.”

Scenarios were presented to the 25 stakeholders attending the session including deaths in Provo, casualties in outer islands like Middle Caicos and one simulation featured some people being trapped in the Office of the Premier.

When Magnetic Media arrived at the DDME office in Provo, the exchange appeared candid and was robust as various challenges and solutions were put top of table for consideration in the country’s action plan, which will ultimately have to be approved by Cabinet.
