PM Christie Ready to Call Elections, waiting for Registration to increase

Nassau, Bahamas, January 30, 2017 – The Prime Minister is ready to call the General Elections after his party resoundingly returned him as leader with 1,264 voting in support of him versus his challenger, Alfred Sears, who only attracted 169 votes in favor of him becoming leader of the PLP.   The results came during the Progressive Liberal Party’s National Convention held last week.

Rt Hon Perry Christie says voter registration only has to be at the acceptable level for him to announce the date of the national vote; at this point the Parliamentary Registration department says registration is at 51% of the total registered voters in 2012; just over half coming out to get on the voter list.  A poor turnout which is labeled as severe voter apathy in The Bahamas.

The Nassau Guardian today reports that there are just under 88,000 Bahamians ready to cast a vote, with the Killarney constituency ranking highest of the 38 nationwide at 75% of its eligible residents ready to vote.   The Prime Minister this weekend reminded media that he has the prerogative to call for the General Election at any time, and once he does, it will be too late to get registered.
