Ministry of Health, Agriculture and Human Services conducts assessment for TCI Health Information System

Providenciales, TCI, January 25, 2017 – The Ministry of Health, Agriculture and Human Services welcomes Mr. Daniel Doane to the Turks and Caicos Islands. Mr. Doane is PAHO Technical Adviser with expertise in Information Systems for Health. The key objective of the visit is to conduct an assessment and a gap analysis of the TCI Health Information System in preparation for the acquisition of an electronic Health information System for the TCI.  The overarching goal being to lay the platform for a health information system tailored for the TCI.

The Minister of Health, Agriculture and Human Services, Hon. Edwin Astwood commented; “Establishing systems for health data collection at the various levels of the health care system in TCI that are well-coordinated will add significantly to improvements in health care delivery.

“As Health Care Services in the Turks and Caicos Islands continue to be scaled up, it is critical to address the health information systems needs comprehensively.  A Health Information System (HIS) is an important support tool in the management of health services delivery as it facilitates the provision of data/statistics in a timely manner to be used as evidence to influence decision-making in health.”

The week of sight visits from the January 16th to 20th was to:

  1. Confirm strategic, organizational and clinical priorities for a health information system platform
  2. Conduct an assessment of readiness and capacity to plan, implement, operate and support a health information system platform;
  3. Facilitate workshop with key stakeholders to validate functional and non-functional requirements for a health information system platform, aligned with strategic, organizational and clinical priorities;
  4. Identify and review with stakeholders several potential approaches for the acquisition of a health information systems.

Mr. Doane met with stakeholders from the Ministry’ executive team, heads of departments, management from NIB, NHIB, TCI Hospital, private sector clinics and Pharmacies, Information Technology departments from government, TCI Hospitals and NIB.
