Providenciales, TCI, January 18, 2017 – A commitment to better resource the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies was made by its Minister, Hon Delroy Wiliams as the country and others around the world marked Earthquake Awareness Week last week.

Minister Williams said:  “…my government is committed to improving and saving the lives of all residents and visitors to the TCI and we will be taking steps to ensure that the DDME can effectively carry out its functions with the requisite resources…” It was also explained that the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies and its partners are not the only ones responsible for disaster readiness.

Minister of Home Affairs, Hon Williams in his message for Earthquake Awareness Week said true success in country preparedness comes when everyone realizes that it is everybody’s business to be ready in the event of a disaster like an earthquake.   He called on churches, public and private sector stakeholders to take their place as leaders in disaster management strategies.

Yesterday, Cuba recorded an earthquake of 5.5 magnitude.   The country is about 90 minutes away by flight and the tremors were reportedly felt for up to 100 miles.
