Providenciales, TCI, January 24, 2017 –  The one pregnant woman reported to have had Zika in the TCI has had her baby and that child was born without complications says the Ministry of Health and Human Services.  Mother and baby are healthy and doing well; which is welcoming news.

There have been 24 Zika cases on record for the Turks and Caicos, this figure is however admittedly not the truest picture of those who may have been infected with the mosquito borne, sexually transmitted virus.  In a report from earlier this month, the public was informed that over 100 notices have been served by the Department of Environmental Health in its continuing effort to fend off surges in cases and problems with mosquito borne diseases like Zika, Chikungunya and Dengue Fever.

In a recent report, the Ministry of Health said over 300 inspections have been conducted nationwide and those have led to the EHD telling as many as 100 to get their premises in order.   If you find there are mosquitoes and you believe there is a need for fogging, the Health Promotion and Advocacy unit shared that conditions have not been conducive to spraying and reported that “over 160 hours of fogging exercises were completed with over 400 swamps treated for mosquitoes.”  We are also told in the report that once weather conditions improve, fogging can happen.
