Duped, Destitute, Dead: Illegal Haitians costly to us and profitable to smugglers

Providenciales, TCI, January 30, 2017 – The flights for the repatriation of 178 Haitians intercepted overnight in TCI waters will cost the country around $55,000.  This big bill does not include what it takes to house, feed, give medical and other personal care, transport and security to the migrants who are being held at the South Dock Road Detention Center.   It was in mid January that the new PDM Government reported to media that spending for repatriation exercises was down; there may now be a new perspective on this expenditure as in under a week, there have been three encounters with illegal Haitian sloops breaking into the country.

While this is certainly a human smuggling ring amped up, it is also a major scam as reports are that these immigrants are being told they are paying to go to Florida and that there are jobs waiting for them there…  In 2015, our interview with a Haitian who breached TCI borders by illegal boat said they pay as much as $3,000 and sell everything to make the voyage.   It means smugglers, at that rate have made nearly a million dollars or $741,000 on the 247 people who paid to leave impoverished Haiti.

It is still unknown, how many paid last week with their lives, 15 bodies were found in Provo waters.   New Haitian President, Jovenel Moise has a big job ahead which involves educating his people about these con artists; it is hoped that a more serious stance by Haiti will drastically reduce the amount of their nationals fleeing impoverished conditions.

This morning, it is confirmed that 144 males and 34 females came in on two different boats, both intercepted and towed into South Dock, Providenciales; in this group were two children.
