Bahamas: Democracy Lively 50 Years after Majority Rule

Nassau, Bahamas, January 10, 2017  –  Hundreds of Bahamians turn out today for two prominent and starkly different marches to celebrate the Golden Anniversary of Majority Rule Day.    The day which ushered in a black majority of House of Assembly representation and led to country leadership by political pioneers like Milo Butler, AD Hanna, Randol Fawkes and the country’s first Prime Minister, Lynden Pindling.

January 10, 1967 was the beginning of the end of the United Bahamian Party, UBP and by 1973 the country would be independent under the Progressive Liberal Party, PLP.   The series of events before and after Majority Rule Day are epic stories of transformative politics in Bahamian life, including the crafting, drafting and establishing of the current ‘untouched’ Bahamian Constitution which gives all of the marchers today the right to assemble, express and associate peacefully.

Magnetic Media will show the Caribbean region and our viewers stateside the images and video of a rousing day of democratic expression in The Bahamas.

The governing Progressive Liberal Party, PLP held its parade from downtown to Christie Park; undoubtedly a poignant return to where much of the struggles of former years unfolded.

The We March Bahamas group left Montague Beach just moments ago, where Police are in heavy presence for a second protest of this organization.   In its first installment in November,  We March Bahamas held a Black Friday protest which went off peacefully.

Grand Bahama Island is also marking the public holiday with events.
