Twin Islands gets visit, Elections Offices back tracks on Split lists

Providenciales, TCI, December 6, 2016 – The Elections Office is wrapping back a plan they say would have curtailed the possibility of voter fraud; no more breaking down of voter registration lists per polling station for the twin islands of North and Middle Caicos.

The Elections Office in a letter explained that the goal was to prevent people voting at two different sites because their name appears on the one list in two places within the district.

This scenario is particularly unique to North and Middle or Electoral District #4 because they are two islands in one constituency.

This could also be said of ED#2 which includes Grand Turk South and Salt Cay; two islands – one district.

There will be election training for candidates, agents and the general public… but it seems some in North and Middle want nothing to do with the Elections Office after islanders’ names were left off the list.

This was inadvertent explained Dudley Lewis, “I must categorically state that the elections office staff cannot and will not remove voters from the voters Registers because the computer system that comprise the voters register will not allow deletion or removal of voters only for persons dead and in this respect we act on the monthly report submitted by the Registrar of Births and Deaths.”

Those imprisoned for 12 months are also removed temporarily, but can have their names reinstated by request once done with their sentence.

In any event, the Elections Supervisor has advised the constituents that they will revert to the old standard used in 2012.
