Selver & Forbes chime in on NHIP Finances
Providenciales, TCI, December 1, 2016 – Independent Candidate O’Brien Forbes said calling for resignations in the aftermath of the NHIP financial situation is premature and political posturing.
The All Island Candidate, who is running as an independent said even an attempt to fix things now would only seem reactionary and like a political gimmick; for Forbes the best move is and I quote, “a thorough audit of the NHIP books be carried for the benefit of the people. NHIP plays a vital role in the lives of our residents and it must remain an institution that is free of the dark shadows of corruption, political chicanery and maladministration.”
Selver called the PNP Government spin doctors in their comments in defense of themselves as the financial reality of a $6 million dollar deficit was last week exposed; Selver said he believes the intention was for the PNP Administration was to raise taxes on the people to pay for the mounting medical bills at the health plan.
“This PNP government is saying that NHIP is experiencing financial problems because of increase demand for healthcare. How come the managers, and the Minister of Health, and the Minister of Finance did not bother to look at the reports years ago, and identify the problems and address them, or did they take a policy position that it does not matter what is happening at NHIP, they would just continue to find the money by taxing the people.”
Clarence Selver in a statement to Magnetic Media said there is no excuse for the unhealthy state of affairs and that there should be a breakdown on who is making the demands on health care and he chastised the Health Minister, Rufus Ewing for keeping the financial audit report of the Hospitals away from the House of Assembly and by extension away from the people of these islands.
