Providenciales, TCI, December 7, 2016 – The Turks and Caicos Islands Airports Authority announced that South Caicos Airport is open for business and that flight operations into the airport is safe. The announcement came in the wake of interCaribbean Airways’ decision to suspend flight operations into that airport.
South Caicos Airport is in the midst of an upgrade which will see the repaving and lengthening of the runway, expanded aircraft parking areas, and new terminal, air traffic control tower and fire and rescue services facilities.
As is customary with any developmental works, risk assessments were completed, mitigations implemented, and regulatory approval was obtained prior to the start of works.
Since the destruction of the control tower by a hurricane back in 2008, the air traffic services were downgraded to an aeronautical radio service which provides aeronautical information to pilots and relay air traffic control clearances. Flight Information Service is expected to resume with the opening of the new control tower.
Air transport remains a vital link to the island of South Caicos and the Airports Authority has taken every measure to ensure that aircraft operations continue in the safest manner possible.
