CPA Watch Group calls TCI elections, ‘different’

Providenciales, TCI, December 13, 2016 – Changes to the elections ordinance and changes on voting systems within the country are expected to not only speed up the process for electors who turn out on Thursday to cast their ballots but it should better protect the secrecy of their ballots.

Elections Observers from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association or CPA are already on the ground, have been here since December 8 and spokesperson for the group, Jim Wells, who is an MP from the Northern Ireland Legislative Assembly said they’ve had meetings and even been to a couple of political rallies.

“We’ve been at two election rallies, organized by the ruling party and one of the opposition parties, so we attended those in a neutral capacity watching and observing.  I have to say it’s very different from what we’re use to at home, totally different.  This morning we met with those who are responsible for the running of the election and we asked some very technical questions.

We met the ruling party in their head quarters, and again asked them a whole series of technical questions on the running and the administration of the election from their point of view.  We certainly didn’t quiz them on any policy issues, it was entirely on the modalities of the election, and we will welcome the opportunity and hope to meet as many of the candidates and the legal parties over the next few days.”

There is one more observer coming in from Jamaica to complete the team of six, which will not only cover all polling stations across the country but rapidly compile a report which will be presented, if all goes as planned, by Saturday.   Wells did warn though that even the most mature societies have hiccups.
