Providenciales, TCI, December 28, 2016 – A new fire truck for the South Caicos airport is badly needed and the Turks and Caicos Islands Airports Authority said the new vehicle is just waiting now to be shipped to the TCI.  After a two day shutdown of the South Caicos airport due to a lack of sufficient fire services at that airport, the XSC terminal today resumed operations.

InterCaribbean Airways on Monday informed of the notice by the TCI Airports Authority for the airport to be closed due to no fire trucks there and in a media release, the Airports Authority confirmed that both fire trucks in South Caicos broke down and failed to start.    “The maintenance staff worked assiduously and successfully restored one vehicle into service that day. On December 25th, the vehicle previously brought into service failed to start again, prompting the suspension of aircraft operations to South Caicos.”

And that is what happened said the TCIAA, needless to say this was both inconveniencing to the travelling public, and an expensive loss in revenue for airlines which had to cancel flights, including special charters.    Airports Authority CEO, John Smith thanked staff and apologized.   Smith also shared that the new vehicle will replace the ageing fleet in South Caicos and boost the service provided there.

Earlier today, Premier Sharlene Robinson and Minister of Transport, Delroy Williams shared that they were in communication with the Airports Authority.   There was no explanation however on why the Airports Authority failed to notify the public of the airport closure.
