Montego Bay, Jamaica, November 8, 2016 – The Jamaica Association of Sugar Technologists (JAST) has been commended for its contribution to the sustainable development of the sugar industry over the last 79 years.
Addressing the opening of the 79th Annual Conference of JAST at the Riu Hotel in Ocho Rios, St. Ann, on November 3, Mr. Samuda said the association continues to play a fundamental role in endorsing technology in the industry. “I want to congratulate the Jamaica Association of Sugar Technologists for having survived over these many years and for the tremendous and significant contributions you have made to the development and survival of the sugar-cane industry. Your role is, therefore, critical as we seek to reposition the sugar industry,” the Minister said.
Mr. Samuda emphasized that now more than ever, the efforts of JAST must be doubled in order to save the industry. “We are grappling with the challenges that confront Jamaica’s sugar industry every day and now we have to position not only the existing players in the industry, but we have to introduce new ones. We must also seek to make the industry very attractive for new investments,” the Minister said.
He pointed out that the sugar industry is the second largest employer of workers in the country, hence it cannot be allowed to die. “Because of this high level of integration and the fact that the industry is so integral to people’s lives and livelihood, we must remain committed to its success and so ensure its viability,” Mr. Samuda told the large group of participating members of the farming community.
He informed that efforts at reforming the sugar industry were successful, as the Government assumed temporary operations of the Long Pond Factory in Trelawny and immediately initiated plans to attract new investment for the industry in that parish. The Minister invited investors, both local and foreign, to come forward and take part in the sugar industry.
