Providenciales, TCI, June 16, 2016 – We do not have to eat junk food if a hurricane knocks us out of commission and to prove it, the culinary students of the Turks and Caicos Islands Community College took rations including tuna, sugar, flour, canned fruit, canned beans, peanut butter and jelly and cornflakes and used them to make some impressive meals.

There were two teams of four and each had a prescribed amount of time to prepare a breakfast item, a lunch time and a dinner item.  Each team achieved that and when it came to taste and creativity, well that was judged by Chef Eddie Laporte, Almartha Thomas, Dorothy Clarke and Chef Nik, “Take in to consideration that this is hurricane prepared food, that means you’re limited to what and how much you can serve.”

The inaugural collaboration was supported by the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies and featured the non-perishables as the groups proved that hurricane food does not have to be horrible food.  Team B boasted not only creativity and simplicity but practicality and their food, according to the four judges tasted better.

Lecturer, Chef Taylor and students Deshawn, Ta-gina and Martha were named winners and got the trophy in the first DDME & TCICC 2016 Hurricane Season Culinary Cook Off.
