Providenciales, TCI, November 2, 2016 – At home, comments continue to come and finally late afternoon the Minister of Border Control informed the country that there are illegal Haitians hiding out after their boat made successful landfall around 12:20 a.m on Monday October 31.
It is believed there could be at many as 100 in the group, or more and none have been captured, at our last check. The Minister also confirmed that two Haitians here on work permits are in custody, being held on suspicion of assisting the group in eluding authorities.
The fine is heftier and the jail time longer for harboring illegal migrants; $20,000 and four years in prison or both. The PDM in a media release early yesterday said the protection of the borders following the prison break in Haiti cannot be handled as business as usual and that an obvious area of weakness needs to be addressed, immediately.
Sharlene Robinson who said help needs to come in from outside, “We are therefore calling on the Governor and the Government to address this as a matter of urgency. Our people are already uneasy with the current state of increase lawlessness and we need to calm the fears of our residents by assuring added help.”
PDA Leader Oswald Skippings last night said in a statement to Magnetic Media that defense mechanisms have failed drastically and safety and security are virtually non-existent. Skippings is calling on Premier Rufus Ewing to take a stand and to declare a state of emergency.
