52 Nominate for TCI General Election, information slow in coming

Providenciales, TCI, November 22, 2016 – In an uncommon style of voting the general public now knows that there is an uncommon number of Turks and Caicos Islanders offering to lead their country through the Halls of Parliament.

The elections office yesterday confirmed that there are 52 people who nominated this past Friday.  The arrival of the information was slow and sloppy.  Notice coming late morning on Monday and directing media and others to the government’s website where there was no official list posted as the notice had said.   There are spelling errors in the names of at least two candidates on the list issued.

There are ten and not seven independent candidates; seven will run at large with no political party affiliation and three independents will offer in Districts #2, Grand Turk South & Salt Cay making it a four way race; in District #3, South Caicos, another four way race and District #10, Wheeland where the race is three way, with no PDA candidate.

When it comes to voting for the All Island district, where every elector can cast a vote for five candidates in total… there is a wide array of options.  There are 21 candidates offering, six women; all five incumbents and all three party leaders.

Some 7,700 people are eligible to head to the polls on election day, December 15 in the TCI.   It is unclear at this point if the system will be more computerized and more expeditious by that time.
