Providenciales, TCI, October 11, 2016 – The Government will today bring a bill which has seen zero public consultation and zero publicity but is designed to directly impact every consumer. The Consumer Protection bill is on the agenda for a first reading during House of assembly meeting this week.
Magnetic Media has done extensive searching on where there had been any public opportunity to weigh in on this document and we have found not one shred of evidence to support that there had been a call or chance for the general public to have input.
Due to the myriad of issues which make it to our newsroom, Magnetic Media has on multiple occasions sought out a Consumer Protection ordinance, but there is none. The advent of this piece of legislation is progressive, but without public input the question now is how comprehensive and reflective and protective will this document be.
During his Budget speech on March 17, 2016, the Finance Minister, Hon Washington Misick did tout the coming of the Consumer Protection Bill; but there had been no further talk of the legislation and it is very likely that today, a bill will be tabled and the contents of it are completely unknown to the people it will impact most.
