Providenciales, TCI, September 19, 2016 – The Department of Coastal Resources is making a market for the harmful lion fish which it hopes will lead to the eradication of the species from TCI coral reefs.
The Lionfish continues to be a marine life terrorist and on October 29th and November 5th that invasive species is going to take center stage as the object of our palates in a Lionfish derby and festival hosted by the DECR and the Turks and Caicos Reef Fund.
The first annual Lionfish Festival will take place in both Provo and Grand Turk and DECR Director, Dr John Claydon explains, “Some TCI fishermen have been catching lionfish on a small scale for many years, and they know that although it’s invasive, lionfish is a very tasty fish. However, these fishers do not typically target lionfish heavily because crawfish, conch, and other finfish are more profitable.”
Provo, the Lionfish Festival is October 29th… Grand Turk, your festival – both held in association with the Ministry of Tourism, Heritage and Culture – is set for November 5, 2016.
