Providenciales, 12 Jan 2015 – Over the weekend, the Turks and Caicos Islands lost an icon in public service, political service, community service and Christian service as news spread that Dr. Rosita Butterfield died after battling a string of heart attacks, some of them severe at Doctors Hospital in Nassau, Bahamas. As the first woman elected to office in the country, Mrs. Butterfield, MBE is hailed as a pioneer and condolences came in from the People’s Democratic Movement on her passing.

Hon. Sharlene Robinson, Leader of the Opposition said: Indeed the life of the late Dr. Rosita Butterfield is a life well spent and history, if recorded truly, will record her as one of the most outstanding Turks and Caicos Islanders ever, having left an indelible mark on all the paths she trod. She undeniably left this world better than she met it and she will certainly continue to be held in the highest esteem…” Dr. Rosita Butterfield was born Rosita Beatrice Missick and is originally from Kew, North Caicos; she was a nurse, a business woman, a minister of the Gospel, a philanthropist who in 2012 established a foundation with her husband and is a former Speaker of the House of Assembly.
