Blazing headlines now, with live streams covering his teen try to society since the unanimous decision from the Jamaica Court of Appeal that has ended years of legal wrangling for iconic Jamaican Dancehall singer and songwriter, Vybz Kartel and his three co-accused; all four men are freed from life sentences.
Tuesday July 31, 2024 ended a decade old fight for Vybz Kartel, whose given name is Adidja Palmer, and his co accused: Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell; Andre St John and Kahira Jones.
The men have been in prison since their arrest in 2011 for the murder of Lizard ‘Clive’ Williams.
Some media reports characterize the evidence presented at trial as circumstantial. The Privy Council in London appeared to agree when it quashed the conviction. The privy council decision was hinged on juror misconduct. The options were a retrial or a release of the men.
Vybz Kartel’s attorney provided compelling information regarding the deteriorating health of the former DJ. It was a strong case against subjecting the entertainer to another lengthy trial.
“We conclude that the interest of justice does not require a new trial to be ordered,” the court read according to media following the case.
The decision, in Jamaica, was made by a three panel committee and President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Marva McDonald-Bishop cited 12 reasons for the decision.
The court cited the “psychological and financial effects that it would have on the appellants,” referring to Kartel’s health.
Also named, potential prejudice in empaneling a new jury due to the high profile nature of the case and the uncertainty of availability of witnesses for the 13 year old matter.
Kartel’s defence attorney, Isat Buchanan said they have started the process for his release and are hoping he will be released today.
Dozens of live streams on social media not only claim Vybz Kartel is already released but has resulted in throngs of supporters gathering, as police and other authorities keep the swelling crowds under control.
“Time Come,” attorney Buchanan is reported saying to media, about the long awaited decision.
